Walter Wayne Wright
September 14, 1945 – October 11, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Wayne Wright (WW) also known by his HAM radio family and friends as KA5QDG. He passed away peacefully on October 11, 2024, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 79.
Wayne was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Jesse H. Jones High School in 1964 and studied Electrical Engineering for two years at the University of Houston. Wayne was a Communications Tech with the railroad for his entire career. He worked for Houston Belt and Terminal (HB&T) Railway until 1996 when it was bought out by Union Pacific (UP) Railroad. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad after 40 years of service in 2007.
Wayne also had his own business, Texcan Communications, where he did radio work for several years for South Houston Police Department, South Houston Fire Department and the Houston Police Department’s Undercover Narcotics Division.
When not at work, Wayne was always doing something with his ham radios or repeaters. He also enjoyed deer hunting, duck hunting and fishing. He loved Labrador Retrievers and had many during his life, including his favorite named Queenie.
He is preceded in death by his father, Walter Cooley Wright and his mother, Arlean Elinor Hesse Wright. He is survived by his only sibling, Jimmy Wright and his wife, Janis. He is survived by his daughter and only child, Sandra Faye Sissom and her husband, Jimmy, along with his grandchildren, Brittany Bannan, Clayton Sissom, Karen Sissom, Rachel Delafuente (Anthony) and Ty Sissom (Katelin) and great-grandchildren, Bethany, Cody, Cheyanne, Chesnee, Malakai and Daxton. Also, he is survived by nieces, nephews and close friends.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024, at South Park Funeral Home Chapel at 1310 N Main St. in Pearland, TX 77581, from 5:00pm- 8:00pm. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 10:00 am at the South Park Funeral Home Chapel with the burial immediately following.
He will be deeply missed and always remembered. He was a great mentor, leader and advisor to many, especially with the HAM radio operators in Houston and surrounding areas. May he rest in peace. 73s
