My first encounter with Sonny is still with me after many generations. I was just starting to date Sonny's neice, Chris Divin. The Macek's and the Divin's have a table at the Iowa Colony community center for a Saturday night dance. I was new to the community, had never been to a country western dance, clueless about the Texas two step. But the community vibe and family cohesion was something I had never experienced.
Even though I had two left feet, Chris gave it her best shot to help me. No doubt, Sonny was the life of the party.
He's telling jokes, telling stories, laughing. He was very demonstratve. He was definitely having a good time. We all were. Someone told me he was a former Green Beret. At this time bottled beer did not have twist off tops. A "church key" was required to open. Sonny grabs an unopened bottle beer and says something about grenades and puts the bottle in his mouth and opens the beer. I was speechless. Did that just happen?
The table erupts with cheers. Crazy. That was my introduction to Sonny. I visited with him and Mary over the years while dating Chris. I will always remember him as a fun loving guy. My deepest condolences to the family. Peace, strength and blessings during this difficult time. Respectfully, Michael Pierson
