I’ve been privileged to know Mary for more decades than I’d like to admit! As next-door neighbors for so many years, Mary and Walter were like a second family during my formative teen years (or before?) ...and beyond. Even when ill, Mary would welcome you inside, greeting you with the biggest bright smile and a warm hug. On her best days, a slice of her epic pie would likely meet you soon after her smile and hug. Her lemon meringue pie was the BEST of the best – smooth, a bit sweet, a little tart, and a topping that was light yet firm so it would stand as tall as Texas hair, and even a stiff wind from Hurricane Alicia wouldn’t knock it over. Just like Mary: strong and sweet, and always leaving you wanting more. Seriously, I developed pie-dar to remotely detect when she was baking! There are so many funny and sweet memories I have of Mary, but her cooking is hands down one of my favorites; and second to her, is one of the most missed things since leaving Texas.
