Lela Marie Smith's Obituary
Lela Marie Smith passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017 in Pearland, Texas. She was born on August 19, 1926 to Christopher and Catherine Warden. She lived in Sioux City until 1961 when she, with her husband and three children, moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma she worked as a secretary for several City of Oklahoma City departments and as an executive secretary for Wilson Foods.
After retiring Lela volunteered her time to the Birth Choice organization where she ministered to young women who needed guidance on caring for a new baby, or who just needed a someone to listen to them. Her church was also very important in her life. She and her husband attended St. James Catholic Church for fifty years.
Throughout her life Lela was a very social person. She and Gale had a wide circle of friends. They enjoyed bowling in various leagues for years. They built a beautiful home on the shore of Lake Texoma where they entertained friends and family with skiing, fishing, and boating.
In 2008 Lela and Gale moved to Friendswood, Texas to be closer their children. Even though they missed Oklahoma, they immediately began making new friends.
Lela is preceded in death by her husband, Gale. She is survived by her children John and his wife, Ruth, Christine Bobo and her husband, Earl, Gale Edward and his wife, Araina. Her grandchildren include Mark Hamlin, Brian Hamlin, Travis Smith, and Mandy Gibson. Lela’s great grandchildren include Rachel Hamlin, Cole Hamlin, Nathan Hamlin, Charlotte Hamlin, Carson Gibson, and Sommer Gibson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am in the chapel of South Park Funeral home. A funeral service will then be held in the chapel at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery.
