Mrs. Katherine Laverne Carter's Obituary
Katherine Laverne Gillam Carter was born on June 12, 1934, to Alwin and Sarah Gillam in Wellington, Texas. She passed away Sunday, June 14, 2015, in Texas City, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Steven Lee Carter, her sisters, Claira Lavone and Carla Kennedy, and her brothers, Roy Gillam and Paul Gillam. She is survived by her sisters Peggy Woodard, Shirley Maxwell and Sandy Durham and her brother Murray Gillam, as well as by her son Gerald Glen Carter and wife LouAnn; son Curtis Ray Carter and wife Kendra; granddaughter Sondra DeAnn Vega and husband Billy; granddaughter Telisha Lynn Carter; grandson Christian Lee Carter; grandson Charles Glen Carter; grandson Christopher Bryan Carter and wife Blair; and great-grandchildren Alyssa LeeAnn Vega, Amber Dawn Vega, Jeremy Paul Vega, Bryce Drake Carter, Dax Walker Carter, Talan Jon Morgan, Kayden Ray Morgan, and Kolton Glen Carter.
Katherine was the fourth oldest of nine children. As the daughter of a farmer, she grew up with a strong work ethic which she carried with her through life. She married Charles Glen Carter on April 1, 1950, in Childress, Texas, and lived in both the Panhandle of Texas and the Houston area for the remainder of her life. She was a store manager for 7-Eleven for many years in the Houston area, and retired from Stop-N-Go at age 65 while manager of their store at the corner of Gordon St. and South St. in Alvin, Texas. Unwilling to remain idle in retirement, she returned to the workforce and spent ten years working for Wal-Mart in Alvin, Texas.
Katherine will always be remembered for her self-less acts of kindness, often doing without so that she could give to others. She shared her home with numerous family members throughout her entire life, offering shelter, food and emotional support during their times of need, while never asking for anything in return. Our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
The family will host a viewing from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, June 19, 2015, at South Park Funeral Home. The funeral service for Katherine will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, June 20, 2015, at South Park Funeral Home in Pearland, Texas, with Pastor Shawn Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at South Park Cemetery, Pearland, Texas.
