Mrs. Gilda Amy Herrera's Obituary
Gilda Amy Salazar Herrera
Born August 28, 1955 in Cuero Texas. Passed away peacefully on February 2, 2016, at the age of 60, surrounded by family after a three-year battle with cancer. Gilda developed a love for teaching at an early age. Upon graduating from James Madison High School, she enrolled at the University of Houston to pursue her passion for teaching and developed a love for Spanish literature. She graduated in 1980 and was awarded two scholarships that allowed her to further her education at the University in the beautiful city of Guadalajara Mexico. It was during this time that she met her future husband Gustavo Herrera. They married in 1983 and moved to Mexico City where Gilda taught for two years. Gilda and Gustavo then returned to Houston, where Gilda continued her career of teaching Spanish for over thirty years.
Together they became the proud parents of three children. Gilda's biggest joy was seeing all three of her children develop a life-long love for learning and graduate from universities. She loved traveling and was happiest when surrounded by family. Gilda leaves behind husband Jose Gustavo Herrera, daughter Alexis Monique of Austin who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, sons Gustavo Alejandro of Houston who graduated from Rice University, and Zachary John who graduated from Stanford University and is pursuing a doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley. Parents John and Lupe Salazar of Houston, sister Gloria Hodge and husband Ken of Norman OK, brother Johnny R. Salazar and wife Diana of Magnolia TX many nieces and nephews cousins and friends. She will be missed by all.
Special Thanks to all her fellow teachers and friends for all the prayers, the visits and the support shown during this difficult time. Also a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Harbor Hospice. The service provided by these caregivers was a blessing.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, the 13th of February, from 11 AM to 3 PM with a rosary to follow. All will take place at Southpark Funeral Home on 1310 N Main St. Pearland, TX
