George Harold Rathbun's Obituary
George Harold Rathbun January 10, 1932 – November 24, 2025 Friendswood, Texas George Harold Rathbun, age 93, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away on November 24, 2025. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Rathbun. He is survived by his son, Paul Rathbun and his wife Nancy, and their children Hannah Wright (and husband Austin Wright), Elizabeth Rathbun (and fiancé Kyle Wilson), and Jacob Rathbun, as well as his son Andy Rathbun, his wife Kim, and their son Derek.
George was joyfully anticipating the arrival of his first great-grandchild — a baby boy due in May to his granddaughter Hannah. In his later years, George was surrounded by the constant love and hands-on care of Paul, Nancy, and his grandchildren. Their presence and support gave him comfort, joy, and companionship. These years spent together will forever be treasured.
Born in Blackwell, Oklahoma, George proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1955. In 1958, he began what would become a distinguished career with the Houston Fire Department. For the next 29 years, he served with honor, ultimately retiring as Senior Captain of Station 61. After retiring, George enjoyed his home in San Leon, where he spent his days on the water, watching the ships pass by and finding peace in the view he loved so much. He also enjoyed visiting the American Legion with his friends, where he found community, camaraderie, and a place he loved to be.
George was cherished for his easy-going nature, warm sense of humor, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. Later in life, he became lovingly known as “Poppy,” a name he embraced wholeheartedly. He proudly wore his Poppy hat and introduced himself that way to everyone he met. Being a grandfather was one of the greatest joys of his life, and he regularly attended his grandchildren’s life events — from dance recitals and sports games to band concerts and more.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to HOPE Residential Assisted Living, including Rachel, the owner, and the devoted caregiving staff. Their professionalism, kindness, and consistent, thoughtful care brought George comfort and dignity throughout his time with them.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 12, from 2:00–4:00 PM at the American Legion Post 554, 1650 Highway 3, League City, Texas 77573.
