Mrs. Detna Kathleen Kacher's Obituary
DETNA KATHLEEN KACHER, age 66, died October 14th at Houston Methodist Hospital surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Renell Levin, and is survived by her husband Ernest Kacher, brothers David and Danny Levin, sons John and Michael Kacher, stepdaughters Monica Caldwell and Stephanie Valentz, and 11 grandchildren.
Detna was born and raised in Galveston, TX October 12, 1950. She attended Galveston Ball High, Houston Community College, and University of Houston Clear Lake, where she earned a Masters degree in Anthropology/Psychology. Detna’s career spanned several facets of health care. She worked as a cardiovascular research radiographer for Baylor at Methodist Hospital, later founded and owned Kacher Lead Aprons, a company dedicated to manufacturing radiation protection apparel with enhanced comfort and safety. She earned a Texas teaching certificate, and taught Health Science curriculum at Friendswood HS, San Jacinto Junior College, and The DeBakey High School for Health Professions.
Teaching was her passion, and she initiated and sponsored many student activities that improved community safety and wellness, including HOSA, the Laura Recovery Project, and Germ Busters for grade school students. Detna wrote Health Science curriculum for the Texas Education Agency, as well as teaching guides and classroom activities for many Health Science courses. She was recognized as Outstanding Area II Health Science Teacher, and given the Distinguished Teacher’s Lifetime Achievement Award by Texas Health Occupations Association.
Detna loved observing and protecting wild birds, caring for dogs, gardening, playing the guitar and listening to music, and was an accomplished cook and seamstress. She enjoyed the theater, especially musicals, and was a regular patron of the Alley Theater and Hobby Center. Above all, she loved engaging her grandchildren in art and craft projects.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Liver Foundation in lieu of flowers.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at Southpark Funeral Home 1310 North Main St. Pearland, TX 77581. A memorial service will follow at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel.
