Mr. Billy Ray Gibson's Obituary
Billy Ray Gibson was born on November 16, 1933 in Cleveland, Texas to Ernest and Alline (Talley) Gibson and passed at home in Pearland on Monday, March 12., 2018 at the age of 84. He was the middle of three sons – Jack, Billy and Donald. Jack and Donald, as well as their parents, preceded Billy in death.
Billy served as a US Marine, deployed to Japan during the Korean conflict. He returned from the Marines to care for his ill father and help his mother. During this time he met and married Carolyn (Hart) Gibson and went on to raise her two sons, Robert and Melvin Sherrouse, as his own. The Billy Gibson family soon grew to include Clifton Morris Gibson and Phyllis Ailline Gibson.
Billy had been a resident of Pearland since 1962 and he and Carolyn watched the town grow as their family grew. Billy and Carolyn were young and fun loving parents, always involved in the lives and activities of their kids and later, grandkids. Billy worked hard as a longshoreman for the Maritime Association and supported his family financially and as a moral leader of the family. He imparted a strong work ethic to his children, all of whom have carried on the tradition of honest, productive and positive lives.
After retirement from the docks, Billy worked a few years along with Carolyn in the transportation department at the Pearland School district. While Billy was a hardworking, responsible, honorable and upright family man, always quietly taking care of others, he also had a more than a bit of mischief and fun in his heart. His eyes often twinkled with humor and laughter!
Billy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Hart Gibson and their children; Robert Sherrouse and wife Chung Sherrouse, Melvin Sherrouse and wife Susan Sherrouse, Clifton Gibson and wife Marty Gibson, and Phyllis Gibson. Grandchildren are Vicky Harp and husband Dan Harp, Joel Sherrouse, Brett Gibson and wife Dr. Amber Gibson, Lydia Marler and husband Tanner, Andrew Gibson, Nathan Gibson, Christian Alm-Gibson and Hannah Alm Gibson, great grandchildren Elliot Harp and Hadlee Marler, numerous nieces and nephews and many loving friends.
Visitation with the family will be Sunday, March 18 ,2018 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, with the funeral service and graveside observances Monday, March 19, 2018 at 10:00 am. Both will take place at South Park Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 1310 North Main, Pearland, Texas 77581.
