It was 1971 at Lamar High School, and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” by Tony Orlando always seemed to be playing — loud, everywhere, like the soundtrack to those days. It was usually the three of us: BJ, Belinda Hernandez, and me. We’d pile into her car for lunch, music blasting, windows down, feeling like the world was ours.
But one day was different. BJ surprised us by bringing an entire turkey dinner she had made herself. While I barely knew how to scramble an egg, she showed up with this beautiful homemade feast. We spread out on the lawn at Lamar and shared that incredible meal together, laughing, talking, and feeling so grown-up and carefree.
Not long after, I moved away from Houston, but those lunches — the music, the friendships, the turkey dinner on the grass — have stayed with me all these years. Some memories just never fade. She was a beautiful lady.
