Mrs. Zena Amstein Bryan's Obituary
Zena Amstein Bryan, born in Bridgeport, CN, January 27, 1917, passed away November 1, 2014 in Webster, TX. Zena worked as a nurse in the US Army from 1943 to 1946, at which time she met her future husband, Bob. She saw him getting off a train bringing patients to the military camp and said to a nearby girlfriend, “that one is for me”.
Zena loved being involved in a wide variety of organizations. She was a member of Garden Villas Methodist Church for over fifty years. She and Bob actively supported the Shriner’s Hospitals. Her membership in the Bay Area Officer’s Wives Club of Clear Lake brought her wonderful friendships. Being fluent in Russian, she was often called on to translate for foreign dignitaries, including the cosmonauts when they visited NASA. Zena also enjoyed her time as one of the first women to serve on the Harris County Grand Jury. One of her fondest memories was being a member of the Krewe of Bacchus in New Orleans celebrating countless years of Mardi Gras. Zena loved clothes, traveling, her friends, and was always the life of the party.
Zena is preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Robert L. Bryan, daughter, Sandra Bryan Dealy, and granddaughter, Heather Dealy.
She is survived by her son, Doug Bryan and wife, Laura, granddaughters, Holli Kight and husband, Allen, Krista Bryan and Erika Bryan, great-grandchildren, Bryan and Ellie Kight, and Benjamin Bryan Sloan.
A private gathering will be held to honor the life of Zena Bryan. Her ashes will be scattered at a meaningful family location and on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
