Mrs. Kirby / Wanda was my typing teacher at Pasadena High Scholl in the early 70s. She was the best and had such an interest in her students. A few years later I went back to PHS as a fellow teacher. She was still great. I remember her unapologetic push for what she felt was right for teachers and kids. One of the funniest moments I recall as a teacher was one morning in the faculty meeting when Wanda started her comment to the Principal saying… "I learned a long time ago that it is sometimes better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission around here...". Everyone was laughing and applauding to the point I forgot what she was pushing for in the meeting, but rest assured, she always had the respect of every teacher, student and administrator in that school. She will be missed but not forgotten.
When I started teaching at Pasadena High School in September of 1965 Wanda Kirby was probably one of the most admired teachers on the campus by her fellow teachers. She was dearly loved and highly admired by the entire faculty for all of the years she taught at PHS by her fellow teachers and I never heard a bad word about her in all of the years I worked with her. One of my vivid memories of working with Wanda at PHS was her imitation of Michael Jackson’s moonwalk! She said ( I know this isn’t politically correct but it was when honestly was the norm) “ I don’t know why everyone thinks Michael Jackson came up with this! A old black man taught it too me when I was growing up in Waldo, Arkansas! “. That is the Wanda I remember. BTW she was also my typing teacher at PHS in the early 1960’s.
