Walter David Muehr and Dorothy Kathryn Muehr, beloved husband and wife, have left a profound legacy of love, community service, and family devotion. They passed away in September 2023, just three days apart after almost 72 years of marriage, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever warm the hearts of those who knew them.
Walter David Muehr was born on January 15, 1929, and was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph and Annie Muehr, as well as his nine siblings: Arthur Muehr, Leo Muehr, Viola Muehr, Richard Muehr, Lillie Shaw, Elsie Brune, Lawrence Muehr, Ella Grabow, and Beatrice Muehr. Walter was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, where he reached the esteemed position of Grand Knight 4th Degree in Council 3700. He was also an active member of the St. Frances Cabrini Men’s Club, President of the South Houston Lions Club, and a former Lieutenant Governor of the Lions Club District 2S-2. He was currently a member of St. Faustina Catholic church. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal in the Military Police from 1951 to 1953. For over three decades, Walter was the proud owner of Walt’s Drive-In Grocery. He was a prominent figure in his community, earning the title of South Houston 1990 Citizen of the Year. Walter’s love of sports involved him in South Houston girls’ softball, where he eventually became vice-president of the league. In his leisure time, Walter was an avid fisherman, a long-time domino player, an esteemed card player (especially bridge, tarok, poker and black jack) and a lifelong Astros fan.
Dorothy Kathryn Muehr (nee Horelica), born on November 14, 1928, was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Olga Horelica, and her brothers, William Toman, Julius Toman, and Leonard Horelica. She is survived by her brother Louis Horelica and her sister Dolores Zdunkawicz. Dorothy was a dedicated member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the South Houston Lions Club, and the
American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She achieved a degree in nursing from the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing and the University of St. Thomas, and her compassion and dedication were evident during her forty-year career as a registered nurse. She served her church communities at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church as an Eucharistic minister and member of the Altar guild society and was currently a member of St. Faustina Catholic Church. Dorothy had a green thumb and found joy in gardening, she was a talented bowler, excellent baker, a skilled quilter and also a lifelong Astros fan.
Together, Walter and Dorothy raised a loving family, and their love and devotion extended to their children: Michael Muehr and wife Jerrie Muehr, Susie Glover and husband Earl Glover (deceased), Mary Kolafa and husband Frankie Kolafa, Mark Muehr and former wife Jane Muehr, and Kathryn Hawkins and husband Mark Hawkins.
Their legacy continues through their cherished grandchildren: Donald Muehr, Michelle Case, Michael Muehr Jr., Summer Lewallen, Sierra Patterson, Shanda Karow, Nicole Null, Heather Stroud, Derek Kolafa, Chris Kolafa, Emily Muehr, Jonathan Muehr, Austin Smith (deceased), Joshua Hawkins, and Jonathan Hawkins.
They are also survived by their great-grandchildren: Chanel Case, Karissa Muehr, Michael Muehr III, Hailey Jordan, Madison Jordan, Katlyn Jordan, Jaden Jordan, Savannah Ruiz, Joshua Patterson, Dawson Patterson, Lavoris Hill Jr., Brayan Karow, Tatum Karow, Lidia Karow, Brielle Karow, Mason Null, Nathan Null, Emma Stroud, Katelyn Stroud, Kipton Kolafa, Colton Kolafa, Leighton Kolafa, and Kyla Hawkins.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests potted plants or honorarium donations to the Texas Lions Camp, PO Box 29047, Kerrville, Texas 78029-0247, to honor Walter and Dorothy's commitment to community service.
Walter and Dorothy Muehr's love, dedication, and service will forever be remembered and cherished by their family and the countless lives they touched. They leave behind a legacy of kindness, community spirit, and devotion that will continue to inspire for generations to come. May they rest in eternal peace, together as they were in life
