Of all the years I knew Wade, this is one of the memories that I look back on most fondly. He, I, and his younger daughter (who was maybe 2 at the time) were sitting in the grass in Elena’s backyard, putting together a yard game. We had to put stickers on squares – maybe it was a bean bag toss. His little girl started pulling the stickers quickly, wanting to stick them everywhere, so we slowed her down and told her to place each one carefully in the middle of a square. I handed her each sticker, and we watched her work so hard to be precise. She then placed each one, in her perfect toddler way, either upside down, sideways, or hanging off an edge. Wade and I kept looking at each other and quietly laughing, while also telling her what an amazing job she was doing with each one. He was so patient with her, and she was so proud of herself. Wade gave her a high five when she was done, and they went off to play the game together. It’s a small memory, but it’s always stayed with me, just sharing a moment enjoying a sweet child.
