Mrs. Virginia "Ms. Ginny" Cook's Obituary
Virginia Cook Cook was born on April 8, 1921 in Crosby, Minnesota and entered the Kingdom of Heaven on January 9, 2011 at the age of 89. She is preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Raymond, her parents and two sisters. She graduated from the University of Minnesota and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. After a brief stint as a research librarian, she signed up to become one of the first airline miles. She met a handsome pilot, Raymond Lee Cook, on one of her flights, and they married soon after, settling in Houston near (now) Hobby Airport, where they raised three girls, Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Weber, Nancy Virginia Barnett and Rachel Lee Burchfield. She was blessed to have three wonderful sons-in-law, Bill Barnett, Tommy Burchfield and Rick Weber, who cared for and loved her as sons. She was also blessed with seven grandchildren, Brad, Andrew, David, Emily, Peter, Abby and Michael, of who she was intensely proud, and in whom she was always interested. She married and raised her family in Houston, but she grew up on Serpent Lake in northern Minnesota, so after her husband, Raymond's death, she moved back there full time to the house that they had built together. Until very late in life, she sailed, canoed, swan, bicycled, skated and cross-country skied in, on and around that lake. Serpent Lake was always where her heart was, and she managed to make one last, wonderful trip up there this past summer. Mama cooked 20 meals a week, cleaned her own house, cracked pecans and walnuts for the cookies that were always on hand, and still had time to roller skate with her girls on the smooth pavement of Gulfgate Mall on Sunday afternoons when stores were closed, bicycle, play tennis, teach Sunday School and help lead Girl Scout troops. In her final years, she moved back to live close to Tommy and Rachel in Columbus, Texas on the grounds of the Country Camp. She was a devout Christian, and the support and love of the staff and member of Believers World Outreach Church were an unbelievable blessing to her. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the memory of Virginia Cook to Believers World Outreach Church, PO Box 5449, Katy, Texas 77491.
