Viola Evelyn Smith's Obituary
Born March 26, 1930 in Gist, Texas. Viola was the eldest of 11 children born to Wesley Hoy Biscamp and Callie Pricilla Smith Biscamp.
She grew up in the forest of East Texas where she met the love of her life, John D “Pops” Smith. They moved to Pasadena, Texas where they started their family with the births of Johnny Dwayne, John D., and Jeff Keith. The family purchased some acreage in the small country town of Pearland in Brazoria County, built a lovely home, and moved in the early 1960s, where Timothy Dexter and Mark Eric were later born.
Upon the death of John D. Sr., and finding herself a single mother with five young boys to provide for without any appreciable skills, Viola found it necessary to return to school. After earning her GED she enrolled in Alvin Community College where she worked and studied extraordinarily hard and received her RN degree.
She then went to work at Pasadena Bayshore Hospital putting her nursing degree to use, working many long and late nights in order to provide for her boys.
Her hard work and perseverance paid off as she eventually worked her way up the ladder to Director of Nursing before she finally retired. Never one to turn away someone in need, Viola also worked part-time at Alvin Hospital and area nursing homes whenever they would call asking for her help. Her love of her vocation, drive to help others, and encouraging words was a major factor in prompting her granddaughter, Polly DeLane Smith Haley, to follow her into the medical field.
Early in her life, Viola accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and her love and devotion to Him never wavered. After moving to Pearland, she and John Sr. were founding/charter members of Brookside Missionary Baptist Church in Brookside, Texas, where she continued to serve the Lord through her service of Sunday school teacher, Pianist and singing solos and in the choir.
