Ula Mae Jackson's Obituary
Ula Mae Jackson passed away April 16, 2024. She is survived by her children: Brenda Papillion of Angleton, TX.; Karla Gilmore of Sugar Land, TX; Kevin Jackson of Escondido, CA; and Cheryl DeGrasse of San Diego, CA. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved cousin, Vannie Baker of Houston, TX.
Ula was born September 11, 1931. Although 9/11 became a day of infamy, it was a very good day for her. She was born to loving parents, Alexander and Loretta Zurborg. She also has a sister, Edna Belle, nine years her senior. Ula grew up knowing her grandmothers,3 aunts and 4 uncles, along with many cousins with which to play. Ula's family loved to travel, and since her father was the traffic coordinator for a rice company, the family was able to travel by train at discounted prices. She was able to travel to all states of the contiguous U.S. at a time that few people traveled for pleasure. She never made it to Alaska or Hawaii. Her favorite place was Estes Park, CO, and the beautiful Rocky Mountains of which she never tired. She shared this love with her children, and they too, loved to travel and have a place in their hearts for the many wonderful family vacations in Colorado. Ula loved music and played four instruments: the piano, the violin, the bass violin, and the kettle drums. Music was always playing in the home, Ula tapping her feet to the beat. Ula Mae graduated from the University of Houston in 1953 with a B.A. in Education and taught elementary school for two or three years. In 1956 she married, and children soon followed. Creating a home for her growing family became her work; and she put her energy into cooking, gardening, sewing, and baking. Her primary task, though, was teaching her children about Jehovah God our creator, the precious sacrifice of his son, Jesus Christ, and the wonderful hope the Bible teaches of life on a peaceful earth where we can welcome back, through the resurrection, those who have passed before us in death to live in peaceful conditions on a beautified earth. She always enjoyed sharing this truth with others and continued to do so until her mind would simply not allow her to do so anymore. She passed on her love for animals to her children. The Jackson household has several pets over the years, Ula would always spoil them rotten. Her grand cats loved when Grandmother Ula visited. Treats would always be given because they always looked to thin to her.
For now, Ula is sleeping in death, safe in Jehovah's memory; and her children and grandchildren miss her dearly. We look forward to welcoming her and many other loved ones back to earth in the future. Though saying goodbye to Ula was not possible for her family and friends, it is more important that we be there to welcome her back. Her family has already begun planning her return party. It will include strawberry shortcake, homemade peach ice cream, watermelon, freshly baked bread and country style vegetables of which she was fond. Toe-tapping music will play in the background and there will be cats. Maybe dogs, too, but definitely cats. We hope to see you there.
