Mr. Thomas H. Mauney's Obituary
Thomas Hilray Mauney was born on March 18, 1919 in Haywood County, North Carolina, and passed away on November 20, 2010. He married Nellie Elizabeth Roland, and they moved to Pasadena, TX to work at the new Champion Paper plant. He served proudly as a member of the "Greatest Generation" in defense of freedom during World War II, seeing action in Europe in 1944-45 and earning the Purple Heart. He returned to Texas following the war to make a life for his wife, son Tom and daughter Teresa. He was very active in the Baptist church and became a deacon. He was a doting "Granddaddy" to his two grandsons Jeff and Derek, and a proud father to his son and daughter. He retired from Champion Paper in 1983 after 42 years of faithful service. He remained very active in his retirement-continuing his church service, participating in the Harris County Senior Citizens organization of which he was President. He played on the Senior Softball Team, bowled weekly in the Senior Leagues, and played golf several times a week. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Nell; son Tom and wife Dixie of Huntsville, TX; daughter Teresa of Houston, TX; grandson Jeff and wife Kerri of Tomball, TX; grandson Derek and wife Tracey of Pearland, TX; sister Edith Crocker of Smithfield, VA; sister Martha Hovis of Charlotte, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. A celebration of Thomas's life will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. at SouthPark Cemetery in Pearland, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staffs of the Pasadena Care Center and Resolutions Hospice for the kind and living care they have and are continuing to provide for both their loved ones.
