Mrs. Thelma Slayton's Obituary
“Oh, How I love Jesus”
There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth; it sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth. Pastor Thelma Slayton lived by those words. Her complete life can be summed up with these words.
Pastor Thelma Slayton, a beloved Wife, Mother, Nana and Pastor, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, November 18, 2018.
Thelma Lawrence was born June 29, 1949 to the late Willie Lawrence Sr and Betty Reynolds in Waterproof, LA. She is the sixth of seven children and was affectionately called
‘Baby Sister’. Pastor Thelma attended Texas Southern University and attained a degree in Accounting. She would later attend, Texas Bible College and received a degree in Theology. She had a personal relationship with God since an early age and later accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior.
Pastor Thelma’s testimony has been told by her many times, after coming home from partying she watched a televised church service that lead her to immediately get up and go to church. She vowed to start going to church at Greater Outreach Baptist Church where she became a faithful member serving the pastor and in ministry. Of course God had a plan because that’s where she met minister Clifton Slayton.
The two were united in matrimony on May 15, 1982. They were called to pastor their first church, Clear Run Baptist Church in Pineville, LA in the late 80’s for two years. She was ordained to preach in 1988. They returned home to Houston, and founded Victory Outreach Church in 1991 on Telephone Road. While attending an Azusa Conference the Holy Spirit spoke Isaiah 58:12 to Pastor Clifton’s heart and the name of the church changed to The Repairers’ Church Family Worship Center.
Pastor Thelma shared a Christ centered ministry with Overseer Slayton with the focus on marriage, intercession prayer and faith. Pastor’s Thelma had a heart for ministering to women with broken hearts. She founded the Women of Wisdom to help women grow and reach their full potential in their walk with Jesus. Pastor Thelma had a way of understanding the hurt that was binding many and she taught, preached, interceding on their behalf to set them free from the strongholds to see how deeply loved by God they were.
After the death of her husband, Pastor Thelma Slayton faith was unwavering as she continued her calling by serving as the Senior Pastor of The Repairers Church and her mentorship of Minister Wil Lawrence, Elder Loranda Iverson, Deacons and Officers of the church. She was also the Director to King’s Kids Academy, a ministry providing loving day-care and after-school programs to community children. She also served on the Founding Board of The Kingdom Council of Independent Christian Churches and Ministries.
She is preceded in death by her husband Overseer Clifton Slayton, Pastor Thelma Slayton will be forever remembered by many including her sisters Geraldine Campbell (deceased), Sarah Holmes (deceased), Rosetta Barkley, Ann Williams, Arlene Fagbemi, and her brother Willie Lawrence Jr,
her son Keith Slayton, and daughter-in-law (Felicia), her daughter Stacie Chandler-Walcott and son-in-law ( Larry), grand-daughters Galen K.
