Susy Mathew's Obituary
Mrs. Susy Mathew (Kunjumole) was born on May 8, 1943 in Vennikulam, Kerala to V. C.
Mathew and Saramma Mathew. She had one older brother who passed away in the 90’s.
She achieved B.Sc. in Zoology and B. Ed in Teaching degrees from Kozhenchery Mar Thomas
College and from Jacobite school in Pathanpuram. Upon her graduation, she taught 2 years in
Vennikulam in the school from where she graduated.
Kunjumole married C.M. Mathew (Thankachan) on June 6, 1968 in Konni, Kerala and lived
there for 6 months before immigrating to the United States in February 4, 1969 for higher
studies. She and Thankachan settled in Los Angeles, California and welcomed their first child,
Jefy, in 1970. Julie, their daughter, arrived in 1973 and they continued to live there till 1978.
While in California, she stayed home to care for her kids while Thankachen worked outside the
home. She was very active in her kids’ education and liked to encourage reading and further
study.
After moving to Houston in August of 1978, Susy began working in M.D. Anderson Hospital as
a Pharmacy Technician and worked there for 19 years. After retiring in 1998, she devoted
herself to caring for her grandkids. Luke is her first grandchild, soon followed by Julian, then
Gabriel and finally, her princess, Dylan. She loved doting on them and spoiling them with
treats. She would always have a packet of candy for the kids anytime she visited them,
despite the pleas of her children not to spoil them. Since 2005, she enjoyed traveling between
Houston and Albuquerque visiting the grandkids and going on vacations with them to many
places including the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, India, Holy Land, and many other places.
Kunjumole was a devout Christian who enjoyed reading the Bible and listening to sermons.
She always had her favorite Christian radio station on in the house to enjoy the songs of praise
and worship. She would frequently set a goal for herself to read the entire Bible in a year and
would reset that goal at the beginning of each new year. She ultimately read the entire Bible 7
times. She devoted her time to studying the Word and understanding the meanings in
Scripture. Any Bible she had was very well marked up with notes and details.
She was a 27 year member of Trinity Mar Thoma Church in Pearland and moved to the new St.
Thomas Mar Thoma Church in Cypress in May of 2018.
She is survived by her husband, kids and grandkids. She touched many lives and enjoyed
helping new immigrants throughout her life because she always remembered all the people
who helped her and Thankachan when they arrived to the States. She enjoyed a good story
and loved retelling those stories, even if she embellished some details when passing it along!
She loved listening to traditional sitar music and some Bollywood movies when available.
Her passing will be felt deeply by all who knew her or had contact with her but she is finally in
Heaven where she dreamed of going and looked forward to seeing the streets paved with gold.
