Susan DeVault's Obituary
Susan DeVault, 57 years old, proud Houstonian, passed away September 22, 2020.
Visitation will be held at SouthPark Funeral Home located at 1310 N Main St, Pearland, TX 77581 on Monday, September 28, 2020 from 4PM - 7 PM. Rosary between 6 PM - 6:30 PM.
The Funeral will be held at Saint Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, located at 10727 Hartsook St, Houston, TX 77034 on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 from 1 PM – 2PM with Father Nicholas Ramirez officiating.
Burial will follow the funeral at SouthPark Cemetery located at 1310 N Main St, Pearland, TX 77581 on Tuesday September 29, 2020 at approximately 3 PM.
Susan was born in Merced, CA on December 26, 1962. She grew up in Houston, was a Girl Scout, won multiple trophies for the UCP Power Pins and won multiple metals in the UCP Wheelchair Olympics. She graduated in the top 10% of her high school class from James Madison High School and continued on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Houston where she was a proud Cougar fanatic and a fixture at all things Phi Slamma Jamma.
For the majority of her career, Susan worked as an advocate for the disabled and was instrumental in working for disability rights with both the Houston Metro Transit system, as well as, protesting for disability rights and campaigning for the passage of the American With Disabilities Act. She even traveled with a large group of disabled Americans to Washington D.C. for the signing ceremony in 1990.
Susan is proceeded in death by both her father David and mother Annalise.
She is survived by her brother Bob DeVault, his wife Stacey, her longtime best friend and roommate Frank Lerma, her more then 30 year friends - Phil Haddad from Chicago and Hilary Ford from South Africa.
Through church at St Francis Cabrini, Susan found her unofficial foster parents – Jeanny and Randy Segel and made many other devoted friends. She had a true passion for being a member of the choir and she, as a Cantor, led the congregation in song. Susan never met a stranger and loved to share her great pride in teaching her beloved 3rd grade Sunday School classes.
