S T E M P I N S K I
Stanislawa ("Stasia" or "Stella") Stempinski, 86, of Cheshire, Connecticut passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011, in Pearland, Texas. She was born September, 1, 1924, in Ostoja Stanislowow, Poland, the youngest daughter of Paul and Anna Nycz. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Florian Stempinski, one brother and three sisters. She is survived by her daughter Christine, family members in Great Britain, Poland, Australia, and Zimbabwe, and dear friends, especially Marylou Upham and the Abate family of Cheshire, Connecticut, Marc Truitt of Edmonton, Canada, and Ms. Etta White of Pearland, Texas.
Her history includes the Soviet deportation of her family in 1940. Despite losing family members and her home, throughout the rest of her life Stasia gratefully attributed her survival in Russia to several compassionate Russian women who looked after her when she was seriously ill. In 1942 she was able to join the Polish ATS Corps, with which she crossed the Russian border to Persia. She was stationed in Persia, Iraq and Palestine before arriving in Great Britain in 1944. From 1944-1949 she was based in London, and served as an airwoman in the Royal Air Force. She married in 1951 at Westminster Cathedral and came to the United States in 1952 aboard the Queen Mary. In 1957 she and her husband settled in Cheshire, Connecticut. She retired in 1989 after twenty-five years with the Stone Safety Corporation. She was a member of Post 98 of the Polish Army Veterans Association, and a parishioner of St. Thomas Beckett Church in Cheshire, Connecticut. She was also a past parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church in New Haven, Connecticut. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and reading, especially writing that shed light on the Second World War. Her family would like to convey their deep appreciation to the staff at Tuscany Village, Hospice Compassus, and the outreach program of St. Helen's Catholic Church in Pearland, Texas. A funeral mass will take place in Connecticut, with burial in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven, Connecticut. A private memorial service honoring her life will also be held in Pearland.
