Mr. Samuel Alexander Carlisle's Obituary
Samuel Alexander Carlisle born April 22, 1916 in Chicago, IL entered into rest on May 4, 2009. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 54 years Phyllis Carlisle and his son David Lawrence Carlisle. Samuel Alexander Carlisle enlisted into the United States Navy in October, 1933, earning the rank of Lieutenant JG Grade before finally receiving an Honorable Discharge in August, 1981. Lieutentant Carlisle had a distinguished Navy career by being awaded 9 medals in all, including 3 Bronze Stars for his participation in several major battle in WWII, a Victory Medal, and a USN Good Conduct Medal. Sam saw action in the European, African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic-Pacific Theatres, and the liberation of the Philippine Islands. He received his 3 Bronze Stars for the battles of Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Leyte Gulf. From the invasion of Sicily to the Philippines, Sam participated in amphibious landings in Borneo, Labuan, Panay, Palawan, Nasugby, Luzon, the Negros Islands, Kwajalein and Eniwetok Atolls in the Marshall Islands, and the Makin Atool. His heroic and proud service to his country encompassed assignments on the USS Neville and USS Crawley as Navigation Officer, LSM 65 as Executive Officer, and other Navy vessel such as the USNATB of Little Creek, Virginia. Sam loved his time in the US Navy and would love to sit with anyone who would listen and explain how someone could navigate by the stars. Sam was owner and President of Lawrence Ilfrey Insurance Agency. He was an active member in the Houston Mutual Insurance Agents Assoc. and served as President in 1953. He was also active in the Texas Mutual Ins. Agents Assoc. for many years and was well known and respected in the Insurance Industry. He enjoyed hunting elk and deer in Colorado and Wyoming and fishing in Oregon and the Gulf Coast and Texas lakes with friends and family. He was a great story teller and shared many of his favorite experiences with everyone. Sam is survived by his daughter Linda Lytle, grandchildren, David Blomstrom, Clair Inman, Dawn Blomstrom, Jennifer Williams, her husband Ralph, Edward Lytle, his wife Rhonda, Christopher Carisle, Geoffrey Carlisle and Lindsey Lytle. Ten great grandchildren, Allison Blomstrom, Matthew Blomstrom and wife Cortney and Andrew Blomstrom, Stephany Blomstrom, Colby Blomstrom, Thomas Inman, Ryan Alexander Inman, Savannah Williams, Lauren Williams and Grace Williams. He was a devoted husband father, grandfather and so proud of all of his family. We will keep him in our hearts and always remember his smile, humor and his zest for life. "May you always sail with a fair wind and following seas." The family will receive friends from 5PM to 9PM, Thursday, May 7, 2009 at SouthPark Funeral Home. A Celebration of Sam's Life will be held at 12:30PM, Friday, May 8, 2009 in the Chapel of SouthPark Funeral Home. Interment will follow at SouthPark Cemetery.
