Rodney Wayne Helber's Obituary
Rodney Helber passed away on September 23, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, daughters Debbie Hays, Mindy White (David), and son Jacob (Jill), brother Tim, sisters Sue Smith and Cheryl Peters. Granddaughters Erin Davis and Kelley Clinch (Chad), grandson Griffin White, great-grandsons Hays and Callan Davis, and Austin and Brooks Clinch. He is also survived by numerous generations of nieces and nephews. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents William Helber and Katherine Blum, Aunt Mimi, and brothers Donald and Douglas.
Rodney was born on August 25, 1935, in Enterprise, Ohio. He attended Logan Senior High School where he played defensive end on Logan’s championship football team. After graduation in 1953, Rodney joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS R.B. Anderson. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Rodney worked as a civilian contractor for the military. In 1965, he began his career at Johnson Space Center. During his 35 years at JSC, Rodney supported the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo Soyuz, Space Shuttle, and Space Station missions.
Throughout his life, Rodney enjoyed hunting, golfing, woodworking, biking, and coaching. His most beloved hobby was watching and rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes as they beat up on Michigan and others.
