Mr. Robert Reed Metcalf's Obituary
Robert Reed (R.R.) Metcalf, known affectionately by friends and family as "Cowboy", died peacefully in his sleep at age 62 on January 21, 2009. Robert was born on September 25, 1946 in Austin, Texas. His family moved to Houston in 1964 and Robert graduated from South Houston High School in 1965. After attending college, Robert made the decision to begin his life-long commitment to public service. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Para-rescue trooper. After honorably discharging from the Air Force at the rank of Sergeant in 1971, Robert joined the Pasadena Police Department graduating from the 21st Police Academy. He spent the next thirty years working on all three duty shifts in various capacities from patrolman and S.W.A.T. member to Accident Re-constructionist and D.O.T. inspector. Robert took a short break from law enforcement after retiring from Pasadena PD in 2001, but returned to law enforcement in 2003 as a Harris County Precinct 2 Deputy Constable in the Civil Division where he worked until his illness in August 2008. Robert had numerous honors and awards bestowed upon him during his 35 years in law enforcement. While too numerous to list; some of his proudest accomplishments included being honored as "Rookie of the Year", several "Officer of the Month" and "Officer of the Year" awards from the Pasadena Police Department, and a Meritorious Service award from the American Legion. In 1991, Robert was honored by the 100 Club of Houston as "Officer of the Year" and was also awarded the Valor Award by the State of Texas. Robert loved law enforcement and the many people he met over the years. Robert seemed to know everyone; he never met a stranger, and treated everyone he met as a friend and he would do anything for.
Robert was preceded in death by his father William Reed Metcalf. He is survived by his mother, Marylou Metcalf and the love of his life, his wife of 35 years, Peggy Jeannette Metcalf. He is also survived by his daughter Shelley (Doug) and grandchildren, Brandon and Katelyn of Manvel, and son Bryan (Macey) of Pasadena. Robert is also survived by brothers Russell (Leslie) of Baytown and Richard of Houston. Robert leaves behind numerous other friends and associates whom he loved dearly. The family will receive visitors 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2009, at SouthPark Funeral home. A service celebrating Robert's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2009, in the chapel of SouthPark Funeral Home with Pastor Mike McMahon officiating. Interment will follow at SouthPark Cemetery. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.southparkfunerals.com
