Mr. Robert Lawrence Hyde Jr.'s Obituary
Robert Lawrence Hyde, Jr., 80, passed away Dec. 2 with his two sons at his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He will be remembered as a man of strong faith who taught his sons the value of hard work and integrity. He was particularly proud of having won three silver Presidential Service Award medals for his volunteer work with Alzheimer's patients. Known as "Bob" by his friends, he was born in Alexandria, La. on July 2, 1930. Bob graduated from Centenary College in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in English. After serving in the Korean War, he attended LSU and earned a second bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959. During the war, he corresponded with Elizabeth Nell Warren and they were married on March 4, 1955 in Shreveport, La. Bob moved to Houston with his family in 1969 and spent his career as a professional engineer, working for 21 of those years with Brown & Root.
Bob and Elizabeth were married for 48 years. Bob was a devoted caregiver during his wife's lengthy illness. Elizabeth, a loving wife and mother, passed away in 2003. Bob was preceded in death also by his sister Dinah.
Bob was a former Republican precinct chairman and enjoyed offering his opinions in frequent letters to the editor of The Chronicle. He was a proud member of Pasadena Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association. He was always very supportive of his family's careers and hobbies, from sports to theatre.
Bob is survived by his son Paul Hyde of Anderson, S.C. and son David Hyde and daughter-in-law Jana of La Porte, Tx. and two grandchildren, Matthew and Kailie Hyde, also of La Porte. Bob also had many friends at Park Place Baptist Church and Freeway Baptist Church. The family wishes to thank friends for their support, particularly his good friend and neighbor Gloria Allen, as well as the care and compassion offered by Hospice Compassus.
Visitation will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday at South Park Funeral Home, 1310 North Main Street in Pearland, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 p.m., also at South Park.
