February 13, 1945 - November 30, 2024
With profound sadness, we announce that Richard Earl Smith passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on November 30, 2024 with his sons at his side.
Born February 13, 1945 in Houston, Texas, Richard was the youngest child of William Earl Smith and Bertie Bedelia Florrow Smith. After graduating from Pasadena High School, he attended Sam Houston State University, where he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and earned a bachelor of science with the intent to practice dentistry. Shortly after his time in college, Richard served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was a combat medic. Once honorably discharged from the military, he had a long and successful career as a technical writer for the aerospace and oil/gas industries. He met and married Anne Johnston Smith in 1978, and together they raised two sons, Brian Alan Smith and William Derek Smith. The family resided together in League City, TX and Alvin, TX, where Richard and Anne retired.
Richard was a kind and loving husband, father, uncle, and grandfather. He was always generous with his time and resources, and helped anyone in need. Together Richard and Anne volunteered for several military service organizations such as the USO and the DAR. He had a passion for aerospace, woodworking and gardening, and science fiction.
Richard is predeceased by his parents William and Bertie Smith, his brother Donald Smith and wife Sue, his sister Lola Smith Fonville and husband Orville, and his sister Betty Smith Holcomb and husband Bill.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Anne Johnston Smith; his son Brian Smith and wife Melissa; his son Derek Smith and wife Frances; his grandchildren, Aubrey, Elaine, Bennett, Aiden, & Esther; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family friends and coworkers who adored him.
A graveside service will be held on December 20, 2024 at noon.
For those desiring, the family suggests contributions in memory of Richard Smith be made to the USO.
