Richard Leon Harris' Obituary
Richard “Dick” Harris
Richard Leon Harris passed away peacefully in his home in Pearland, Texas on August 18th, 2024. He was surrounded by his son John, his granddaughters, Kristina, August, and Haley, and great grandchildren, Amanda, and Benjamin as he took his last breaths and departed this life.
Richard was born in Seneca Falls, New York on Friday, July 19, 1940. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Edna Harris, his siblings John, Bill and Dave, stepson David, and grandson Ethan.
Richard’s younger years were filled with days of building wooden race cars with his brother John and pushing their younger sister Donna around in them. He enjoyed racing motorcycles and cars. He joined the United States Navy from 1960-1962.
Richard moved to Texas in 1974. He worked hard in the auto parts industry and only stopped working a few months before leaving this world. He enjoyed working and made many lifelong friends. As a hobby he continued racing cars in Texas and was known as “Rawhide.” He was an avid Nascar and wrestling fan. His favorite shows to watch were old westerns and Everybody Loves Raymond. He loved beer and could cut a rug back in the day. He had a sweet tooth and ended every night with a serving of ice cream.
Richard could make anyone laugh with his jokes, storytelling, and endless and numerous facial expressions. He had a mischievous but warm smile. He was a simple man but particular and had a routine. He was kind but loved to “bitch” just because. He came off grumpy at times but was extremely caring and devoted to his family and friends. He did not have much but would give the shirt off his back or his last dollar to someone in need. He did his best as a father raising two rambunctious boys and was a wonderful and involved grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his sister Donna (Butch) of New York, his two sons John and Lee (Kyann) of Texas, his stepdaughter Suzanne of Texas, his grandchildren Kristina, August, Haley, Olivia, Ashley, Justin, fifteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at South Park Funeral Home and Cemetery (1310 N Main St, Pearland, Texas 77581) on Monday August 26, 2024, beginning at 1pm for family and 2pm for the public. A service will follow at 5pm giving those who wish an opportunity to speak or share stories about him.
