Mrs. Petina G. Pervin's Obituary
Petina Gale (Gibson) Pervin, 66, passed away on May 9, 2018 after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer. Petina was born in Houston, Texas October 13, 1951 to Malcolm C. Gibson and Katherine Kim Gibson. Having lived most of her life in Houston, her recent home was in Pearland, TX.
She is preceded in death by: her parents, husband Rickey A. Pervin, mother-in-law Dee Pervin, infant daughter Angela Pervin, grandson Chance Choate, and brother, Gary L. Gibson.
Petina is survived by her sons: Charles Choate (loving companion: Amanda Hard), George (Bo) & Debbie Pervin (daughters: Jennifer, Erica & Nicole), brother Malcolm C. (& Ann) Gibson, Jr., sister Kim (& Richard) Overall, sister-in-law Linda Gibson. Nieces and Nephews: Keoni (& Lynn) Gibson, Jeffery L. Gibson, Julie (& Bob) Coonce, Melissa (& Carl) Hicks, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and her faithful four-legged babies (Chuy, Two-Two & Puddy).
Petina always set goals for herself whatever her circumstance. She was a natural leader and always challenged herself to take on multiple responsibilities. She was always happy to assist, encourage and support family, friends, work, church, or social events with a permanent smile on her face. She enjoyed being around others and readily volunteered to help - her favorite thing to do was cook and feed others.
Petina worked in the Pasadena Independent School District Food Service for 36 years, retiring as a District Nutrition Director. Early in her career, she attended San Jacinto Community College, receiving an Associate's Degree in Nutritional Management.
After retirement, she enjoyed participating in many activities, including but not limited to:
• Being with family - playing domino's, preparing meals, loving on the grandkids, great grandkids, and great nieces & nephews
• Quilting – attending weekend retreats and meetings. She was a member of the Gulf Coast Quilt Guild in Alvin, TX
• Hibiscus Shows & Meetings. She was a member of the Space City Hibiscus Society
• Attending church services for spiritual fellowship. She was an active member of Living Stones Church and Strong Faith of Pasadena.
• Traveling - some of her travels include Hawaii, Graceland and taking many cruises with her friends.
• Fellowship meetings with longtime friends at various restaurants, discovering new places and visiting old favorites
• Planning & preparing meals for special events, informal gatherings and most importantly, her family.
Petina's health had declined over the past few years after being diagnosed with gynecological cancer. Standard medical treatment was performed, but the cancer metastasized to her brain. After a couple of years through chemotherapy & radiation treatment, she was admitted, in a debilitated state, to Memorial Hermann Hospital on May 4, 2018. The cancer had advanced rapidly and she was transferred to Harbor Hospice in Pearland, TX on the evening of May 8, 2018. The care from Harbor Hospice was excellent. They were compassionate, empathetic, kind and professional.
Petina had several visitors from one of her church homes (Strong Faith of Pasadena). They began praying for her as soon as she arrived at Harbor Hospice. The morning of her passing, Lela, Sheila, Annette and E.G, from another one of her church homes (Living Stones Church in Alvin, TX) arrived to pray over her. On May 9th around 10:30 am, less than 24 hours after her admittance, she quietly and gently took her last breath as her spirit was released to God in a peaceful manner. The family is extremely grateful to everyone’s guidance, assistance, encouragement, prayers and comfort. We know our beloved, Petina, is free. If we could see her now, she’s walking streets of gold, standing tall & whole, she’s seen His face and the pain has been erased.
Petina lived as in the Proverbs 31:10-31 description of a virtuous woman: Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband does safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeks wool, and flax, and works willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she brings her food from afar. She rises also while it is yet night, and gives meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considers a field, and buys it: with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She girds her loins with strength, and strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good: her candle does not go out by night. She lays her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretches out her hand to the poor; yes, she reaches forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes fine linen, and sells it; and delivers girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looks well to the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but she excels them all. Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
In remembering Petina's heart is Galatians 5:22-23 scripture: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
