Mrs. Opal L. Guthrie's Obituary
OPAL LEE GUTHRIE, 92, was called to her Heavenly reward on January 15, 2016. She was born December 2, 1923 in McKenzie, Alabama. A graduate of Red Level High School in Red Level, Alabama, she attended Massey Business College in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1951, Opal married Henry Louis Guthrie of New Orleans, Louisiana and enjoyed many wonderful years living in Houston with her family.
Opal was an active member of River Oaks Baptist Church since 1957, participating in Bible studies and Sunday School classes, as well as teaching children’s Sunday School classes for years. Opal led a dedicated life and cared for everyone she met. Opal loved working, and spent many years in a career that brought her numerous awards and commendations for working with the Special Agent in Charge of the United States Customs Service. Opal loved to entertain her family by playing piano beautifully. She was an avid baker, talented cook, traveler, and a graceful competitor at any game. She loved to express her creativity through sewing, ceramics, or most any other arts, and was passionate about reading her Bible. She mastered whatever she did, even taking up biking in her seventies.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband Henry Louis Guthrie, her parents Jean and Mary Lee, her brother Henry Lee and wife Carol, her sister Dorothy Louise Lee Johnson and husband Ravaughn, her sister-in-law Sister Leah Guthrie, SSND, and her grandchild Charles (Cody) Joseph Cemino III.
She is survived by sister Gloria Jean Wesley and her husband Max, her brother Samuel Lee and his wife Nancy, her three loving daughters, Suzanne Guthrie Schultea and her husband Michael, Cynthia Guthrie Cemino Johnson and her husband Eugene, and Sandra Guthrie Bozyk and her husband David. She had many grandchildren who loved her dearly, Carisa Cemino Rudd and her husband Jonathan David , Taylor Lee Schultea Darsey and her husband Drew, Elizabeth Anne Schultea, Sarah Elizabeth Bozyk, Nicholas Hunter Bozyk, Christopher James Bozyk, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as an extended family and many close friends.
