Mrs. Olga Clavell Aponte's Obituary
Olga Clavell Figueroa Aponte passed into the loving arms of Our Lord on February 23, 2019 at the age of 95 years old. She was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on August 2, 1923 to Zenovia Figueroa and Jose Clavell.
Olga dedicated her life to the lovely care of her family beginning with her own parents and siblings extending three generations to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a homemaker whose deep love and unselfish care touch every member of her family, past and present.
Olga is preceded in death by her husband, Antonio Aponte, her parents, Zenovia Figueroa and Jose Clavell, her sister, Juanita Clavell, and her brother, Roberto Clavell
She will always be remembered by her brother, Jose (Pepe) Clavell, by her loving children, Luz Straw and Carlos Aponte, by her grandchildren, Liza Ward, Nadia Sorensen, Nikki Garcia, Marisol Serrano and Simone Coates, and by her great grandchildren, Emerald, Gabrielle, Ethan, Isabella, Illyana, Marco and Desmond.
Olga left her hometown in Puerto Rico in the 1940’s, during the Second World War, to work in New York City, where she met and married her husband of over sixty years, Antonio Aponte. At heart, she was a homemaker, a person that dedicated her life to the love, care and upbringing of her family. As a young woman, she travelled to New York City by air and rail, which included a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Miami, Florida, and a two day train ride, from Florida to New York. She once recounted how a soldier gave up his seat to let her sit comfortably on the long journey North. She lived in New York City, where she raised her children, returned to Puerto Rico, where she lived with her husband, and re-located to Texas, to live with her daughter, Luz Straw, and where she enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was able to travel to attend family weddings and functions, throughout her advanced age. However, in her last two years, it was her daughter, Luz Straw, that provided the lovely care that nurtured her body and allowed her spirit to go gently into the next life. Olga’s legacy is one of family and love, unselfish caring and a quiet and gentle presence that brought joy and happiness to everyone she touched. She lived a full rich life encompassing all the joy, happiness, pain and sorrow that defines existence of this earth. She will find peaceful rest in the next life.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the Hospice nurses, aides and HomeInstead health care personnel that assisted in Olga’s care during her final year.
The Aponte family will be receiving friends and family on Saturday, March 2, 2019 for a visitation starting at 9:00AM at SouthPark Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM for anyone that would like to join the family. Interment will follow services at SouthPark Cemetery.
