Mrs. Nancy Wickens Solomon's Obituary
In loving memory of Nancy Wickens Solomon Nan passed away peacefully on July 20, 2011 in her Friendswood home after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Nan was born on July 17, 1933 in Strawn, Texas. She is predeceased by her parents, Oley Roland Wickens and Neva Vernon Wickens and her sister Gwendolyn Wickens Akers. Nan graduated from Weatherford High School in 1950. In 1952 she married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Charles Solomon soon after he came home from the Korean War. Before you knew it - they had added to their small family with three daughters while Bob attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock. When the family moved to Houston, Nan settled in to her role as homemaker and was a great support to her kids while they were growing up. She loved bowling, was active in girl scouts for over 13 years, was on the PTA and worked on the Friendswood League of Women voters. As the girls grew older, she managed a small tools rental store that she and Bob co-owned, worked as a bookkeeper, ran a mobile home lot and later owned a successful liquor store until her retirement. She was a long time (41 years) resident of Friendswood, Texas. She will especially be remembered for her devotion to her family, her love of card games and the occasional trip to gamble in Louisiana or Las Vegas. She enjoyed fishing, boat rides and water skiing. She spent many family vacations camping all over the United States or near water at Lake Brownwood or Lake Livingston. Survivors include her husband, Bob Solomon; daughter Sherry Byrnes; daughter Becky Danos, daughter Kathy (Bruce) Bynum, and Brother Robert Wickens. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in her name.
