Mrs. Molly K. Mathew's Obituary
Molly Kurien Mathew was born on January 14, 1949 in Kumbanad, Kerala, India. She was the third child among five children of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson. Her siblings are John Johny, late John Koshy, Gracey Babu and John Easo. Their family moved to Kallar, Idukki where she completed her high school education. As she had an inherent nature of caring, she decided to pursue nursing to help others. She attended to St. John’s Nursing College in Bombay for her nursing degree.
It was during this time that she became closer to Jesus Christ. She accepted Jesus as her personal savior and received water baptism. It transformed her life! She wanted to learn more from the Word of God. She came to the United States in 1976 with the help of her aunt who was the founder of Sharon Fellowship Church. After one year of full time theological studies, she started working as a nurses-aid at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. Along with her work, she continued to study and passed the RN exam. She worked for 25 years as an RN at various hospitals including UPMC Montefiore, Forbes Hospital, and Health South. She touched many lives with her prayers for them and her testimony.
She had a great respect and value for her culture and traditions. While she was working as an RN at Montefiore hospital, she returned to India and prayerfully decided to have an arranged marriage with her soul mate, Kurien Mathew. They got married on December 28, 1978 at Sharon Fellowship Church in Thiruvalla. In December 1980, the Lord blessed them with their first daughter Reena and 2 ½ years later with their second daughter Reeba in August of 1983. They moved to their current home in Monroeville in 1983 and have been a beacon of light ever since.
Molly lived a life of care and compassion. Apart from her profession of caring for the sick as a nurse, she was also a person of compassion for all people around her. She devoted her efforts to extend emotional and financial support to all her family members and was actively involved in mission work in the USA and in India. She extended helping hands to relatives and brought them as immigrants to this country. She had a great vigor to touch the lives of people around her in Pittsburgh by participating in many Bible studies/Christian fellowships and gatherings, including her church Monroeville Assemblies of God, Malayalam groups, Indian Christian Fellowship, Asian Indian Christian Church, Shalom Fellowship, and New Life Indian church.
Molly Kurien Mathew will be remembered fondly by family and friends as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunty and friend. She fought a brave battle against Alzheimer's disease. Through this battle the overflowing love of this beautiful couple has turned into a wonderful love story that has touched the lives of countless families. She was a vibrant soul; one who literally lit up the room with her presence. She will be missed by all, but her memories will live with us forever.
