Mrs. Mary Pearl Fisher Batt's Obituary
Mary Pearl Fisher Batt's soul left for Heavenly service on September 3, 2008 at age 97.
Mary was born to Henry 'Harry' Herbert Fisher and Edna Pearl Cortes Fisher on February 7, 1911 in Houston, Texas. Her paternal grandparents Charles & Elizabeth Fisher immigrated from England to Texas in 1870 while the parents of her maternal grandparents Henry W. Cortes Jr. and Mary Magdalene Bering Cortes immigrated from Germany to Texas in 1850 and 1848 respectively. Her brother Henry Herbert Fisher Jr. and her sister Mildred Ruth Fisher Brooks preceded her in death. She was marred to William Murray Batt who lived to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons and their wives: William Murray Batt, Jr., wife Dorothy Faye Robinson of The Woodlands and David Lynn Batt, with wife Joyce Evelyn Dickson of Tallahassee FL.; her four grandchildren and their spouses; Michael David Batt and wife Michelle of Reston VA; Dr. Angela Faye Batt Murphy and husband John Edward 'Ned' Murphy of Dripping Springs TX; Jeffrey Alan Batt of Tallahassee FL; Stephanie Marie Batt McMahon and husband Rev. Joel Dyer McMahon IV of Porter TX; her eight great-grandchildren: Justin Alan Batt, Colin Kerry Murphy, Meredith Faye Murphy, Stephen Joel McMahon, Christina Noel McMahon, Branden William Batt, David Michael Batt and Sarah Elizabeth Batt; her nephews and nieces: Herb Fisher, Jim Batt, Ron Batt, Dewitt Gorman, Rod Gorman, Barbara Gorman, Jack Bodden and Anne Nelson.
Except for 1917 when her family lived in El Paso, her childhood and early adult life were spent in Houston. There she attended Montrose Elementary, Lanier and Johnson Jr. High Schools and then graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1930 where she was a member of PEP and Booster Clubs and served as captain of her basketball team. After her marriage in 1931 at St. Paul's Methodist Church, she continued her and her family's membership there until 1940 when the family moved to Shreveport LA with the relocation of United Gas. In Shreveport she became active in Christian service: Sunday school teacher, Women's Society of Christian Service Life Member, District Youth Camp Counselor 1949-1961 and Wesleyan Service Guild District Chairwoman 1973. She was active also in community service as a Cub Scouts Leader, Senior Girl Scouts Director, Y-Teen Counselor and given an Honorary Life Membership in the Louisiana PTA, 1970. She managed a school cafeteria from 1953-1974 and held membership in the local Business and Professional Women's Association. 1n 1974 she and her husband retired to Pearland, TX where she became active at the First United Methodist Church of Pearland as Neighborhood Care leader. Other service was given as a volunteer at the Windsong Village Home, with the Pearland Senior Citizens Club and the local Grandmother's Club. She moved to The Woodlands in 1992 after the passing of her husband where she became active in the Sarah Circle of The Woodlands United Methodist Church. Her family of friends expanded in 2001 when she moved into the Regent Care Center. The family will receive visitors starting at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, September 6, 2008 at SouthPark Funeral Home until the service time which will be held at 10 a.m. at the graveside of SouthPark Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Regent Care Center, 10450 Gosling Rd., The Woodlands TX 77381.
The family gives thanks to the staff of Nexus Specialty Hospital, Regent Care Center and Odyssey Hospice for the special care they gave for her last days.
