Mrs. Martha Hammett's Obituary
Martha was born in Memphis, TN, to Luther Victor and Etta Crawford Watts, the third child of six, and only daughter. She graduated from J C Hume high school in Memphis in 1944, and shortly thereafter proudly went to work at S E Toofey & Co. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Oscar Tom Hammett of Fayette, MS, shortly after his separation from the US Army in Memphis. The two were married on May 3, 1947, and enjoyed 54 years of marriage before Oscar’s passing in October 2001.
Following the untimely passing of her mother, Martha and Oscar took in her father and youngest brother Ben, the latter of whom proved great company in the eighteen months the couple were separated when Oscar, who had remained an army reservist, was called to active duty and stationed in Japan during the Korean conflict. In the mid 1950’s, the couple moved to Garland, TX, and in 1956 welcomed their only child, Tom. Following Tom’s completion of elementary school, Martha re-entered the workforce with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas, with whom she spent 17+ years, working in their Dallas and Richardson offices before retiring in 1984. Both before, but especially after retirement, the couple spent many wonderful years travelling the continental US in their RV, often in the company of Martha’s brother Vic Watts and his wife Louise.
In 1994, Martha and Oscar followed their son to Natchez, MS, and in 1996, welcomed their beloved daughter-in-law, Misty Hammett to the family. In 2000, they again followed their son to Katy, TX, where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Oscar, parents Luther V and Etta C Watts, and brothers Victor, Austin, Jack, and Lloyd, and their respective spouses. She is survived by her son Tom Hammett and his wife Misty of Katy, brother Ben Watts and his wife Claire of Memphis, and nieces and nephews too numerous to list.
Martha was peacefully called home by her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the evening of Saturday, February 25, 2017, in her home at Carriage Inn, Katy, TX. She will rest in peace beside her husband Oscar at SouthPark Funeral Home and Cemetery in Pearland, TX.
