Mariamma Benjamin's Obituary
Mariamma Benjamin was born to the late K.C. Thomas and the late Rachel Thomas of Edappavoor Ayroor in Kerala, India. At a young age she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She attended nursing school at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Andhra Pradesh, India, and graduated in 1969. In 1972, she came to the United States, moving to Upstate New York then Brooklyn, New York, where she worked as a nurse at Wyckoff Heights Hospital. In 1976, she married Thomas Benjamin. She gave birth to a daughter, Blessy, in 1978. She and her family moved to Houston, Texas in 1982, where she later gave birth to a son, Steve, in 1983, and another daughter, Susan, in 1984.
Mariamma’s faith and belief in Jesus Christ was a prominent, defining aspect of her life and it showed to all those who met her. The only thing that matched her love for the Lord was the love she had for her family. She was relentless in the care and love she had and showed for her husband, children, and loved ones.
Her primary love language was food. Whether at home or for church meetings, she was always making something delicious and made sure everyone had enough to eat. She treated friends and strangers with the utmost kindness, and through her interactions with others, she exemplified the love of God in her life.
After working as a nurse for over 40 years, she retired in 2014. Not even two months after retirement, she was diagnosed with kidney failure and began dialysis. She later developed a myriad of health issues, including heart failure.
Even while going through the nonstop cycle of dialysis treatments and hospital visits, with several extended stays, she never wavered in her faith in the Lord. Mariamma went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, in Houston, Texas. After many years of dialysis and suffering through other various ailments and illnesses, she was called home at the age of 76. Mariamma is survived by her husband, Thomas Benjamin, oldest daughter Blessy, son-in-law Shannon, son Steve, youngest daughter Susan, and granddaughter Samantha, who misses her “machi” very much. Her siblings are the late Gracy Samuel, Jacob Thomas, the late Raju K Thomas, Samuel Thomas, and Johnson K. Thomas.
