Mrs Mae Wilkins' Obituary
WILKINS Mae Wilkins went to Heaven on April 26 to be with Jesus Christ, her Savior after a battle with lung cancer. Mae was born on February 29, 1932 in El Captain, NM.
Mae was a resident of Pearland for 41 years. She was a popular high school student and was Head Cheerleader and in the Honors Choir and Debate team at Odessa Permian High School in the late 1940's.
In 1950 at the age of 18, she married the love of her life, Les Wilkins and was married to him for 57 years until his death on October 20, 2007. For the first 8 years of their marriage, while her husband was in the Air Force and going to college, Mae worked for the telephone company. Afterwards, she was a stay-home mother and devoted the rest of her life to family, friends and many charities. Later in life, Mae had the privilege and enjoyment of working for Judge Bill Todd with the JP office.
Mae leaves two children, Larry Wilkins of Pearland and Lisa Wilkins of Houston; and her grandson, Shawn Wilkins who is currently stationed in Washington DC in the Navy. Shawn was the jewel in her crown and to Shawn she was a loving and devoted grandmother "Nana".
Mae's life was full of volunteer work. In the 1970's she managed a re-sale shop in Pearland called the Rags and Riches Shop. This raised funds for the Association for Retarded Citizens. Mae was also active in many political campaigns for her favorite candidates. But her most favored campaign helped get her son Larry Wilkins elected and re-elected to Pearland City Council. A lifelong Catholic, during the 1980's and 90's, Mae was active at St. Helen Catholic Church. She was elected to Parish Council and taught First Communion classes for many years. She held several offices in the Women's Club and played a major leadership role as Chairman for their fund raising events (dances were very popular!). For over 10 years she was a Youth Director in the (CYO) Catholic Youth Organization, which had over 35-45 members. They went on trips and helped with many church projects and charities in Pearland. They were responsible for building the 1st bell tower at St. Helen. Mae was also active in the Pearland Lioness and enjoyed working in several positions and socializing within this worthwhile organization.
Mae loved life and would never let details get her down. A positive and caring person, she will always be remembered for her devotion to family and friends and for the many precious memories she created during her lifetime.
A graveside service will be held at Resurrection Cemetery on Thursday, April 30 at
11:00 AM across from the South Park Funeral Home at 1310 N. Main in Pearland.
Deacon Darvin Bordelon of St. Helen's will be conducting the service. The Family wishes to express special Thanks to the staff at Regency Hospice in League City and to dear family friends, Beth and Jack Haskins and Rob Risley.
The Family does request in lieu of flowers donations to be made to your favorite charity.
