Mr. Mack Hamilton Davis Sr.'s Obituary
Mack Hamilton Davis, Sr. was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924 in Houston, Texas. He
loved to joke about him replacing the turkey that year!
Mack loved to play baseball from an early age... he often recalled riding his bike to the old Houston
Buffaloes stadium (long before the team became the Houston Colts and later the Astros) so he could
watch the games through the hole in the fence. He played ball throughout high school and college and
was playing for the St.Louis Cardinals farm team in New Iberia, Louisiana when Peal Harbor was bombed
on December 7, 1941.
Mack immediately decided to join the Navy and became a radioman on the minesweeper USS Vigilance.
He saw combat throughout the Pacific and participated in most of the major naval campaigns until the end
of the war.
After the war, he returned to Texas to attend college at the University of Texas in Austin. During this time
he met and married Virginia Jean Peaslee-Davis, on January 30th, 1948. In 1949, the couple had twin
daughters... Carolyn Lynn & Valarie Wynn Davis.
Mack was called back to active naval service when the Korean War broke out and served honorably
throughout that conflict. When he returned home, he completed his degree at UT and moved back to
Houston, Texas with his young family. In 1955, his son, Mack Hamilton Davis, Jr. was born.
In 1960, Mack Sr. joined the Olin Matheson Company as a purchasing agent and moved the family to La
Porte, Texas. Mack thought this was a perfect location to settle since he loved to fish and the new home
was close to Galveston Bay. For years, Mack Sr. and Mack Jr. fished the Galveston Bay system and
Mack Jr. has many wonderful memories from those years.
Mack Sr. and his wife Virginia loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many places throughout the US &
Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean.
Mack and Virginia were married for 61 years when she passed away in November of 2009. After her
death, Mack Sr. lived with his son, Mack Jr. for some time before moving to Trinity Shores, an assisted
living community in Port Lavaca. Once again, Mack was in a perfect place... near the Bay and living
independently again with the help of a wonderful & caring staff and some new friends.
On July 28th, Mack Sr. was admitted to the Port Lavaca Hospital where he was well-cared-for until he
passed peacefully on Monday, August 15th, 2011. Mack Sr. is survived by his son, Mack Davis Jr., his
grandsons, Danny & Brian Davis, along with nieces, and other extended family members & friends.
