Mr. Loyd G. Turney's Obituary
Loyd George Turney Sr., devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away at home on November 18, surrounded by his family and his beloved pets. Loyd was a native Houstonian and told many stories about growing up during the war. He loved to tell the story about how he and his cousin would pick up rubber tires for the war effort. He graduated from Milby High School, where (during his senior year) he met Colita Kennedy who two years later became his wife on April 16, 1954. They were married for 63 years. He attended University of Houston for two years and began working in the air conditioning field working for All-Year Air Conditioning until he founded Gulf Coast Air Conditioning Co. Inc. in 1962. He was an extraordinary man known for his modesty, humility, selflessness, and his high morals and ethical standards. His quiet unassuming charm endeared him to his business associates and clients, He loved what he did and when his health did not allow him to go to the office, he would call and ask “Is there anything I can do for you and though the answer was no, he would say “well I’m here if you need me.” That really sums up Loyd, he was there if you needed him!
He was a lover of animals and over the years brought home strays that needed a home one of which became a shop dog named Freeway because he was stranded on I 45 in the pouring rain. He never could stand to see animals suffer. He loved his Australian Shepherd (Baby Girl, he would call her) and his three cats that were born in the backyard and never left (the boys). He loved animals but nothing surpassed his love for his family. He so enjoyed telling stories about the car he bought for his son George when he turned 16 and being in Phoenix an hour after the birth of his grand-daughter Brittany. He was also fortunate to get to know three great grandchildren Peter, Skylar, and Joy. He loved flowers and would often call us over to look at a new bloom on a plant and say ”Isn’t that beautiful!” His passing leaves a void in our life but we are comforted by knowing he is in the house of our Lord.
Loyd is survived by his wife Colita, his daughter Lisa, son-in-law Randy, granddaughter Brittany Shatz grandson-in-law Jared, great grandchildren Peter, Skylar, and Joy, grandchildren Matthew and Ashley Bethke, and, Mark Bethke. He is also survived by his sister Janette Allen, and brother in-law Richard Allen as well as numerous nieces and nephews that called him Uncle Loyd. He is preceded in death by his beloved son George, his sister Doris and his parents Loyd and Lillie May Turney.
Services will be held at South Park Funeral Home. A visitation will be held on Monday Nov. 28 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and his celebration of life will be Tuesday, Nov.29th at 12:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal rescue or charity of your choice.
