Ms. Lilian Allan's Obituary
Lilian Patricia Allan, 88, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2012 in Austin, Texas. She was born on May 2, 1924 in Chambly, Quebec to Henry and Ida Laframboise Macdonald. Lilian was married to Andrew Eric Allan of Belfast, Northern Ireland for over 60 wonderful years. Lilian grew up in Chambly and moved to Montreal in 1942 to attend Phillips Training School of Nursing affiliated with Homeopathic Hospital, Children's Memorial Hospital, and Alexandra Hospital, all of Montreal. She practiced as a registered nurse and became head nurse in Montreal before marrying Eric in December 1951. Lilian was then whisked away to British Colombia following a honeymoon around North America where she quickly realized that her life with Eric would be an adventure -- their honeymoon included staying in places such as a jailhouse and a farmhouse, even travelling through Texas where she would eventually live for almost 60 years. After moving to Texas in 1953, Lilian continued her nursing at St. Joseph's Hospitals' Pediatric Unit in Houston, Texas. Shortly thereafter, she retired from nursing to dedicate her life to raising her family. Second to her family was her passion for travel, books, and animals. Over the next 50 years, Lilian travelled the world with her husband, family, and life-long friends Marion and Tom Norwell of Montreal, Canada, and Mairead and Jack Brown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Lilian enjoyed the simple things in life; a beautiful yellow rose, a maple leaf changing color in the fall, a gentle snowfall, a crossword puzzle, or a kiss from one of her favorite dogs (Missy, Rascal and Cupid). Those who knew her certainly will remember her infectious "giggle" related to these simplicities.
Passionate about her French Canadian heritage, she was also a citizen of the world, enjoying and respecting all cultures and ethnicities wherever she journeyed.
Lilian was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Ida Macdonald; and her sister, Isabel Hamilton.
Lilian is survived by her husband Eric of Austin, Texas; her sister Pauline Thompson of Toronto, Canada; her children Rod Allan and wife Karen of Houston, Texas, Andrew Allan, David Allan and wife Colleen, Maureen Myrick and husband George, all of Austin, Texas; her grandchildren Amanda Allan, Jonathan Allan, Bethany (Allan) Zanetti, Dustin Allan, and David Allan, Jr.; her nieces Lee Thompson and Karen Nesbitt and nephews Gardner and Hal Prescott. The family thanks Lilian's recent caregiver, Rose Maria Rendon, for her love and generosity. A celebration of Lilian's life will be held at South Park Funeral Home, 1310 N. Main Street, Pearland, Texas on Saturday, November 17, 2012. The family will greet family and friends between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial donation to Austin Pets Alive (www.austinpetsalive.org) of Austin, Texas, or your favorite pet rescue organization in honor of Lilian's love of animals.
