Leon was born in a log cabin on March 6, 1936 in Smackover, AR to Beaura and Sybil Childs. He met his soulmate, Bessie Gale Brown, at the Melrose movie theater in Waco in 1955. Their love resulted in the births of 4 children, Leon Jr. (1958), Clifton (1959), Vanessa (1962), and Stacey (1965).
‘Sonny’ was a loving, caring, soft spoken man who had a contagious smile and a passion for his family above all else. His wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren were his greatest joy. He was an artist at heart, selling several paintings to offices, banks, and furniture companies throughout Texas, in addition to those paintings that decorated the walls of his home in Friendswood. Professionally, he was a Structural Designer by trade, retiring from National Oilwell Varco in 2015.

He is survived by his wife Bessie Gale, his children Leon Jr. of Friendswood, Clifton of San Antonio, Vanessa (Craig) Hardegree of Midlothian, Stacey (Amy) Childs of Alvin, his brothers Beura Childs Jr. (Belinda), Charles Childs, Joseph Childs and sisters Patricia Horner, Sally Acedo, Susan Porter, Mary Asher, Kathy Glick along with many nieces and nephews.
