Mr. Lawrence Ray McClelland's Obituary
Lawrence Ray McClelland (also known as Daddy Mac, Uncle Ray, Union Brother) passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019. Mac was born in Egan, Louisiana, on August 5, 1929, to Jackson and Leafy Laughlin McClelland. He was predeceased by his loving wife Louise, his parents, his two sisters and four brothers, and the majority of his friends from church, work, and the neighborhood. He is survived by his daughter Patty Echols and husband Tommy, daughter Carol McClelland, granddaughter Elyse Rountree, sister-in-law Frances Koen, brother-in-law Mutt Lewis, and sister-in-law Anna Culbertson and husband Leon Culbertson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many beloved friends.
Mac proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked as a truck driver for Haliburton in El Campo and as a suspended crane operator at Armco Steel in Galena Park.
Growing up in south Louisiana, Mac learned how to cook from his dad and sisters. However, his greatest accomplishment in the kitchen was the making of peanut brittle. Using the recipe from a bag of Imperial Sugar, Mac started making peanut brittle in the 1980s. He gave away most of the brittle he made and soon realized it was a way for him to put smiles on faces. He made his last batch of peanut brittle right before Christmas.
The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses and techs on 3 Medical at Houston Methodist Clear Lake for the care and love they showed him during his stay there.
There will be a Celebration of Life service for Mac on Saturday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. at South Park Funeral Home in Pearland. The service will also celebrate the life of Mac’s wife, Louise, who passed away last April. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you make donations in Mac’s memory to Star of Hope Mission, the Salvation Army, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Houston or Galveston, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
