Joseph C. Joseph's Obituary
Joseph C. Joseph (May 5, 1949 – June 20, 2026) was a devoted family man, mentor, and leader whose life was defined by resilience, humility, and unwavering love.
Born in Kottayam, Kerala, to Mariamma and Kuruvilla Chunkathara, Joseph was the third of seven children. At the age of seventeen, he moved to New Delhi, where his professionalism, work ethic, and diplomacy quickly opened doors for career advancement. During this time, he married his late wife, Susan Thomas, and together they welcomed their sons, Sanjay and Sanjeev. Soon after their marriage, Joseph was diagnosed with a rare form of throat cancer. Though the treatments were physically devastating, his determination never wavered, sustained by Susan's support. As he recovered, his talents led to the opportunity of a lifetime when he joined the central minister's team serving the office of the Prime Minister of India. The couple later moved to Libya, where Joseph did project management for an international company before immigrating to the United States, first settling in Chicago and ultimately making Houston, Texas, his home.
Encouraged by family and friends, Joseph pursued nursing and built a distinguished career marked by clinical excellence, compassion, and servant leadership. He cared for countless patients and served in several leadership roles within the Indian American Nurses Association of Greater Houston, mentoring and earning the admiration of those who worked alongside him.
Following Susan's passing, God graciously brought Mary Thomas into his life. Married in 2001, they built a home grounded in faith, friendship, and unconditional love. Joseph lovingly embraced Mary's daughters, Janice and Christina, as his own. Mary and Joseph were companions who cherished traveling, family gatherings, card games, meaningful conversations, and the simple joy of doing life together. Through years of illness, Mary remained his faithful partner and devoted caregiver.
Joseph cherished his community of family, lifelong friends, and colleagues whose love, fellowship, and encouragement were among his life's greatest blessings. He loved watching sports, debating politics, following the news and stock market, and engaging in thoughtful conversations. He found joy in his beloved dogs, Bradley and Callie. Even through multiple battles with cancer, strokes, and other health challenges, his mind remained remarkably sharp, his words thoughtful, poetic, and encouraging, and his spirit increasingly prayerful. He was most grateful to watch each of his four children marry and have families of their own.
Joseph entered peacefully into the presence of the Lord, surrounded by his beloved wife and children. He is survived by his wife, Mary Thomas; his children: Sanjay, his wife Shefalee, and their daughter Saleena; Sanjeev, his wife Kinnari, and their children Nalin and Mila; Janice, her husband Johnson, and their children Daniel, Christiana, and Andrew; and Christina, her husband Leo, and their son Isaac.
Joseph modeled quiet strength, remarkable patience, and an extraordinary capacity to understand others. He instinctively saw the good in people and responded with grace and wisdom. His legacy will continue to shape the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
