Mijares, Jose Alfredo's Obituary
Jose Alfredo Mijares, age 57 of Houston, Tx, left this earth to begin his eternal life on May 5, 2026, surrounded by all who loved him.
Fred, as we all knew him, was born February 3, 1969, in Harlingen, Tx to Manual and Dolores Mijares. He was raised in Lyford, Tx alongside his siblings Jenny and Juan. He graduated from Lyford High School in 1987. In June of 1997 he married his wife, Gregoria G. Mijares. He loved to give Georgy a hard time and tell people she was “robbing the cradle” because she is a whole year older than him. He never let her forget that she was older. The couple resided in Raymondville, Tx until 2005 when they took a leap of faith and moved to Houston. Fred always remained grounded to his roots in the Rio Grande Valley, but he quickly became a Houstonian.
Fred was a man of many hobbies including watching his Houston Texans and the Astros, often posting social media content throughout the games. He would never pass up a chance to catch a good garage sale or Bravo’s breakfast buffet on the weekends. He shared his love for model military tanks and music with anyone who would listen. He also loved and was very proud to share his extensive “useless knowledge” as he called it. In the last several years he took a strong interest in vinyl records and developed quite the collection.
Fred was a man of determination, and nothing proved that more than the battle he fought with his own health. The last decade had not been kind to him and in 2015 he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Fred did not take this diagnosis lightly and quickly made all the appropriate life changes to ensure that he could keep this ugly disease at bay for as long as possible. As if that was not enough, in 2017 Fred was hospitalized and diagnosed with Giullian-Barre syndrome (GBS). He was told that most people never walk again and remain wheelchair bond. Fred’s response was simple…..NO. He absolutely refused to fall into that category. He hit physical therapy hard and had to learn to talk, walk and do all basic life skills over again. Despite what he was told, after 2 months of being in the hospital Fred walked out of that hospital upon discharge. 6 weeks later, he returned to work and he only got stronger as more time went by.
Cirrhosis did not take Fred without a fight. He remained “Fred” throughout all his hospitalizations, often asking his nieces and nephews to bring him things he knew he could
not have. He did all he could to stay here with Georgy and his family until the very end. Fred is survived by his wife of almost 29 years, Gregoria G. Mijares, his brother Juan and wife Christina Mijares and many nieces, nephews and extended family members who will miss him fiercely. He is preceded in death by his father Manual Mijares, mother Dolores Mijares, and sister Jenny Mijares.
Funeral Services will be held at South Park Funeral Home, 1310 N Main St. Pearland, Tx. 77581 starting on Thursday May 21, 2026, with a viewing from 5-9pm. Rosary will be on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 5-9pm. Catholic Service will be Saturday May 23 at 11am at South Park Funeral Home, he will be laid to rest Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 12 pm.
