Jolean Dauterive Bourque's Obituary
Jolean Dauterive Bourque, 70, of Missouri City, TX passed away on December 30, 2024 after her hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jolean was born March 22, 1954 in Port Arthur, Texas, the daughter of Carl Edward Dauterive and Eva Gay Fortenberry.
Jolean graduated from Bridge City High School in 1972 and then attended Lamar University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Speech in 1975. She then became certified as an ASL teacher in 1976. Working for the Southeast Texas Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD), Jolean flourished as an ASL teacher and served as a mentor and positive role model to hundreds of students during her time in the classroom. Wanting to further her skills, Jolean earned her Masters of Science in Speech Audiology in 1978. She became certified as an Educational Diagnostician in 1993, and continued to work with the RDSPD to assess students and assist teachers and staff in developing educational planning. In 1999, Jolean successfully obtained her Supervisor Certification for both General and Special Education. After years of service and dedication, Jolean became the Director of the RDSPD in 2008, where she successfully led the program to provide an array of instructional services for deaf/hard of hearing students in more than 25 school districts in Southeast Texas. Jolean retired from education in 2015.
While at Lamar University, Jolean’s classmate and friend, Sandra Bourque, set Jolean up on a blind date with her brother, Ricky Bourque. After an evening of listening to the croonings of Percy Sledge, their 46 year love story began. Jolean married Ricky Bourque on August 5, 1978, in Port Arthur, TX. With the birth of their two daughters, Brianne in 1983 and Jobeth in 1986, Jolean and Ricky built a loving home. Always the loving mother and wife, Jolean was the foundation of the family. Whether it was assisting with school projects, taking meticulous notes during piano lessons, planning and cooking family dinners, coordinating family vacations, or serving as a baton twirling “coach and stylist”, Jolean did it all. While they lived in Nederland, she and Rick also served as the Nederland High School Band Booster Presidents and enjoyed the fellowship of the First United Methodist Church congregation.
Jolean loved animals and had many pets during her lifetime. Her “first love” as she would say, was her poodle BB. Jolean had many cats during her lifetime, whom she loved as family and held close to her heart.
Jolean and Rick moved to Missouri City, Texas in 2016 to be closer to their daughters and four granddaughters. Jolean spent this time being “Honey” to her four granddaughters and reuniting with her sister, Betty Kay White (Kay-Kay). She and Betty enjoyed planting and tending to flower gardens and outdoor landscaping. Jolean truly had a green-thumb, tending to plants passed down from her grandparents. Her four granddaughters spent many days running and playing in the garden.
She touched the lives of family members, co-workers and friends with her ability to lift spirits, especially through her ability to plan surprising moments that would often create lifelong memories. Her love language was gift giving, providing joyful and heartfelt gifts with every celebration. This passion persisted until her last days, gifting her granddaughters special jewelry they will cherish forever.
Remaining to cherish Jolean’s memory are her husband, Ricky Bourque; daughters, Brianne Addison and her spouse, Cody Addison, Jobeth Brown and her spouse, John Brown, and her four beautiful granddaughters, Annie, Isla, Edith, and Zoe. She is also survived by her siblings, Janis Williams, Keith Dauterive, Sharon Ramsey, and Carl Dauterive, as well as several sister and brother in-laws, nieces and nephews from both the Dauterive and Bourque families alike, as well as many close friends and her cherished Sienna neighbors.
Jolean is preceded in death by her father, Carl Edward Dauterive; mother, Eva Gay Kinard; step father, Murf Kinard, and sister, Betty Kay White.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Houston Hospice for their love and support during Jolean’s last days. With the help of the nurses and social workers, our family was able to make cherished Christmas memories with our wife, mom, and grandmother.
Visitation and Memorial Services will be at the South Park Funeral Home in Pearland, Texas on January 24, 2025. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. and followed by Memorial Services at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers or gifts it is requested donations be made to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77030 (https://www.houstonhospice.org/donate/).
