Johnny Niday, 72, passed away November 13, 2023, peacefully at his home. Johnny was born John Barron Niday III on January 17,1951 to John “Jack” Barron Niday Jr. and Joy Ruth “Nana” Niday.
Johnny was a ship captain, father, and friend. He spent his early years in the funeral business working for his father Jack at Niday Funeral Home. Johnny went on to be a proud member of the Seafarers International Union, working his way up to Captain of the tugboat “The Judge” for G&H Towing, making lifelong friends and memories along the way. After earning the rank of captain, Johnny then carried on his father’s legacy as a Houston Ship Channel Pilot, unit 115. Johnny was renowned for his daring maneuvers and ship handling abilities up and down the Houston Ship Channel. After a full career of guiding ships in and out of the Houston Ship Channel, Johnny retired to a quiet life in the town of Port Isabel.
Johnny is survived by his sister Joy Niday, his two sons John Barron Niday IV and Noah E. Niday, and his 6 grandchildren Axel, Abel, Abigail, Blaire, Wyatt, and River. Both of Johnnys sons carry on the Niday family tradition of seafaring, marking over 100 years of service to the Houston Ship Channel and Texas Gulf Coast
