Mr. John Milton Arrington's Obituary
John Milton Arrington passed from this life to the next Sept. 4, 2015, at the age of 90.
“Grandy” as he was affectionately known by several generations of family and friends was always on the move, leading a productive and innovative life as a caring father and grandfather, industrious builder and developer, innovative egg rancher, industrial electrician, community and political activist, and genealogy researcher. John was unswerving in fighting for causes and issues he believed in. He was instrumental in shaping property rights laws as they apply to coastal property, and he fought many battles with government entities that tried to take beach-front property from private property owners without accurate science and without due compensation. He also helped write egg-production laws for Texas. In 1987 he received a commendation from the Texas House of Representatives for his public service.
John’s passion was his family, and he and his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, made countless trips to Galveston and beaches across the Gulf of Mexico with family. Many special memories come from family gatherings at the beach house in Bermuda Beach, fishing and shrimping in the Gulf, collecting fish from the Sargassum seaweed that travels into the Gulf from the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic, shelling from Galveston to Sanibel and into Mexico, uncovering Murex and Sundials while beachcombing from San Luis Pass to Matagorda, spotting shark teeth among the Coquina shells decorating the edge of the beach, and advocating beach preservation. John volunteered for the United States Army in 1944 but was discharged for medical reasons in 1945.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy June Storm (b. 1925, m. 1943, d. 2006), his second wife Betty Jean Epps Moore (m. 2008, d. 2013), his father Ezekiel Arrington IV and mother Lillian Rowland Arrington, as well as two half-brothers, Carl Arrington and Robert Arrington. John and Dorothy had one daughter, Susan Elaine Arrington, who was born in 1948. John is survived by his daughter Susan Elaine Arrington Schaezler and son-in-law Donald Joseph Schaezler, PhD, of Cibolo, Texas; four grandsons: David Joseph Schaezler (wife Esther Christine Lawson) of Lake Oswego, OR, Michael Allan Schaezler (wife Vivian Manalang) of Danville, CA, Robert Arnold Schaezler, JD, of New Braunfels (fiancée Jennifer Diane Harlos), and Ryan Nathaniel Schaezler (wife Brittany Ann Bates, DVM) of Pearland; and five great-grandchildren: Ethan Joseph Schaezler, Brendan Christopher Schaezler, Allan Joseph Schaezler, Austin Connor Schaezler, and Michaela Veronica Schaezler.
Services will be held graveside at South Park Cemetery in Pearland, Texas, on Monday, September 14, 2005, at 10:30 AM with Reverend Ricky Moore officiating.
