Joan Marie Davis' Obituary
Joan Marie Davis was born on April 25th, 1954, and on July 14th, 2022, left this earthly plane and started walking on the golden streets in heaven. She was greeted in heaven by her parents, Roy and Jo Davis, her beloved grandmother and hero, Frances Davis, and her nephew, Zack Golden. And, if there are cats in heaven, the many cats she rescued over the years were there, as well.
There was so much more to Joan than what was visible. She was such a presence in our lives, both sweet and formidable, depending on the moment.
She loved her friends and their times together eating out, driving around, and laughing. She was a member of the YMCA in Webster, enjoying the pickle ball court particularly. While she was growing up, she attended First Assembly of God Church in Pasadena, under the pastorate of the Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Goodwin (“Dad and Mom”). Afterwards, as a younger adult, she was a member of Calvary Chapel Assembly of God with Pastors Jay and Debi Burnett. For the last number of years, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Pasadena. She loved her Sunday School class at FBC Pasadena and enjoyed going to Game Day with the seniors. Many conversations were interrupted by laughter as she talked about all that had happened when they were together. She appreciated her church and she bragged often on the sermons taught by Dr. Redmond and Jon. She served in any capacity she was able, but her two favorite activities was serving the seniors when they had a meal at the church and greeting the members at the door for services. When she would come visit, she wanted to be sure to be home on Sunday so she could attend “her” church.
Joan was a life-long resident of Pasadena, TX, a graduate of Pasadena High School (Class of ’75), as well as a die-hard sports fan. Her favorite pastime was watching sports. All her teams were from Houston: The Rockets, the Texans, and the Astros. She didn’t miss many games and particularly during the seasonal overlaps, she never strayed far from a TV. She watched them all and she knew most of the players. She watched the Rockets during the season because they were from her hometown. Her fall Sunday afternoons were reserved for the Texans, at least until until J. J. Watt left. But her absolute favorite team was the Astros. During baseball season, she was not available while she watched a game, and heaven help you if you interrupted. She knew the standings, the players, and most of the stats. She wondered if Altuve was available.
She loved with her whole person, and she loved without reservation, whether human or animal. In every conversation, her concern was focused on your welfare, or the welfare of someone that she knew that needed physical help, prayer, or both, and all your pets (about whom she asked individually by name.) Once a need was brought to her attention, even in passing, you could rest assured she would ask about it at every opportunity until the need was resolved, and probably many more times beyond that. She never forgot anyone. Saying good-bye on the phone was a minutes-long affair. We will miss those phone calls.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sister and brother-in-law Reneé and Randy Golden, Kilgore, TX; brother and sister-in-law Donald and Beverly Davis, Kerrville, TX; nephews and nieces Donnie and Beverly Davis, Robert and Pascaline Davis, Stephen Davis, and Candace Golden. Cousins Martha and James Marshall were especially close to her heart. We. Along with numerous friends, will miss her so very much.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at a place and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions be made in her name to a charity of your choice.
