Beard, Jerry Wayne's Obituary
Jerry Wayne Beard Sr., 84, was born in Huntsville, Alabama, on July 18,1940 to Herman and Doris Beard. His family moved to Houston, Texas where he went to Milby high school and lived most of his life. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 22, 2025 in Round Rock, Texas.
Jerry was:
A great athlete, who loved all sports, but had a passion for baseball where he played shortstop at many levels. A coach, who later became president of the Dow Park Little League in Harris County, where he coached and umpired for nearly a decade. A golf enthusiast, who loved the game of golf and played at every opportunity, even before Thanksgiving dinner. A plumber, who started out by working for his brother-in-law Sonny. He later became a Master Plumber and founded his own business.
A true professional, who passed his skills and wisdom on to his sons. A veteran, who served in the U.S. Army for 3 years, 3 months, and 13 days. While in Korea, he endured many hardships, including the loss of fellow soldiers, harsh climates, wild dogs, and contracting leprosy. He said it was the coldest place he's ever been. A devoted husband, the love of his life was his wife, Doris Beard. Their shared love for the Lord and country music bound them together for 63 years. His favorite was George Jones. A father, who cherished his children, Jerry Wayne, Krista and Brent, his four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was a father figure to many.
A servant, who loved to serve the Lord and spread the gospel. He was a chaplain at VFW Post 9188 and a deacon for decades at Pine Valley Baptist Church and First Baptist of South Houston. He and Doris were deeply involved in church life. His church home in Lago Vista was Grace Fellowship.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Herman & Doris Beard, his sister, Barbara Vidal, and his brother, Herman Beard.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Beard; his sister, Lynda Callaway; his three children: Jerry Wayne Beard Jr. “Skip”, Krista M. Sprague, and Brent E. Beard; his grandchildren: Cameron Beard, Maranda McCoy Boggs, Courtney Bushee, and Rae Anna McKenzie; and his great-grandchildren: Brooklyn Ibarra, Madalyn Boggs, Claire Boggs, Warren Bushee, Evelyn Bushee, Jesse McKenzie, Lyra McKenzie, Kloee Beard, Zoey Beard, and Novalyn Beard.
Jerry Beard, lovingly known as Poppy to his grand-children, will always be remembered for his giving nature, sharp wit, effortless humor, deep love for Jesus Christ, and the way he ended his phone calls:
“I’m tired of talking to you.”
