James Virgil Harris Jr's Obituary
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:30 PM on Saturday, January 20th, 2024, at Christ Church Sugar Land located at 3300 Austin Pkwy in Sugar Land, Texas, for James Virgil Harris Jr, 94, who passed away on January 6, 2024.
Born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late James Virgil Harris Sr and the former Dessie A. Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and sisters, and son in law. Siblings: Leland E. Harris, Margaret Harris Gill, Lois Harris Bramhall, Mary Harris, Homer G. Harris, and David T. Harris. Also, three half siblings: Percy Harris, John G. Harris, and Florance Harris. Son in Law: Paul A. Staton At a young age he discovered his first love for flying while working weekends and summers at Goddard Flying Service where he earned his private, commercial, and instructor’s pilot’s license. He attended the University of Oklahoma before leaving to be a pilot full time. In 1949, he met the love of his life, while taking a bus ride back to work in Texas. Shortly after, they married and remained by each other’s side until the very end. They traveled the world together for work and pleasure and moved all over Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas while he worked in the oil exploration field. Eventually settling in Houston, Texas to raise their only child, Beth. In the early 80’s he and his wife Barbara became charter members of Christ Church in Sugar Land, where they remained active for many years. He was well known for his love of flying, traveling, photography, and being a loving and compassionate man, who embodied the true definition of a Christian man and role model. He will forever be known for his love of his family and the devotion to his wife until the very end. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Barbara Harris; daughter, Beth Staton; two grandsons, Jason Staton and Adam and wife Carrie Staton; four great grandchildren, Nicholas Staton, Walker Staton, Abigail Staton, and Levi Staton; sister in law, Monyeen Cooper and numerous nieces and nephews.
